God builds up his church by appointing different people for different tasks. By God’s grace, Paul laid the foundation for the Corinthian church and someone else was building on that foundation. There are no “one-man shows” in God’s ministry. However, there is only one foundation which is Jesus Christ. Anything else used in the foundation of the church will be revealed on the Day of Judgment with fire.

The Corinthian church had been built on a foundation of Jesus Christ. But their divisions revealed a dangerous shift toward building on something – or someone – other than Jesus. They were God’s temple on the foundation of Jesus. Those who destroy God’s temple will themselves be destroyed by God. Build your faith and ministry on Jesus alone.

Finally, Paul warned them not to be self-deceived. The Corinthian Christians were proud of their worldly wisdom. But that wisdom was foolishness in God’s sight. It was ultimately futile. Instead of boasting about human leaders, they were encouraged to see that God alone had given them everything. They ought to boast about what God had done for them in Christ.
Application: Father, thank you for our one foundation, Jesus Christ. I repent of pride. Help me to know more of Jesus and less of the world.
