At the appointed time of midnight God struck down all the firstborn of Egypt. This tenth blow caused Pharaoh and all the Egyptians to surrender and release Israel. No longer was Israel enslaved to cruel masters; no longer would their children be slaughtered. This is the power of our God to deliver his people. His arm is not too short to save!
For generations Israelite slaves worked and died to make Egypt wealthy. Now, as they leave, they take all the wealth as well (35-36). God redeems their past suffering and provides for their future.
They had entered as a large family (1:5), they now leave as a nation of hundreds of thousands (37). This is how God fulfilled his promise to Abraham (40-41; Ge 13:13-14). God is always faithful to his promises. He keeps his own time, however, so we need to trust him.
The Exodus was so sudden they had to eat bread on the go, without letting it rise. Yet all that night God kept vigil over them. Our God is vigilant. Let’s keep vigil with him in our day as well.
Application: Father, thank you for delivering me through the blood of Jesus from the tyranny of sin and the devil. Thank you for your vigilance. Help me trust you all the more and keep vigil with you in prayer.
One Word: God delivers us through Jesus
