Sixth months after Elizabeth conceived, a young girl named Mary was unexpectedly visited by the angel Gabriel. Mary was prepared to marry and begin a new chapter of her life. But the Lord had a very special plan for Mary. The angel told her not to be afraid; she had found favor with God. With this favor, she had been chosen to give birth to a child and name him Jesus, who would be called the Son of the Most High. Favor means undeserved grace. Mary was chosen to give birth to the promised Messiah, the Savior of the World.
Mary asked the angel how this was possible. She was a virgin. The angel told her that the power of the Most High would overshadow her. We sometimes wonder how we can accomplish what God asks us to do when it seems impossible. However, is not through our own ability but through God’s Spirit. As the angel told Mary, nothing is impossible with God. His word shall not fail.
How did Mary respond to this? She gave up her dreams and plans for marriage for something much bigger than herself; she submitted and yielded to God’s will for her life. “I am the Lord’s servant,” she said, “may it be unto me as you have said.” May we have such a heart posture, to be fully yielded to the purposes and will of God for our lives. May we know that nothing is impossible for our God.
Application: Father, I count it a joy to lay my life down for you. I am your servant. Help me not to calculate, but trust that you make everything possible. I am Your servant. May Your word to me be fulfilled.
One Word: I am the Lord’s servant
