The Jews wasted no time in seeking to secure legal execution of Paul. They hired a smooth-talking lawyer to try and secure from Felix a conviction with no evidence, only loud accusations (1-9).
Paul faced this mob of accusers alone. It could have been a very emotionally terrifying moment. But Paul told the facts of his activities in Jerusalem (11-13), getting at the heart of their dislike: his worship of God as a follower of the Way of Jesus. Paul always strove to keep his conscience clear before God and man (16), and that gave him strength to face injustice. Paul continued to outline the facts. Stripped of the hyperbole, Paul’s story was the more reasonable one, and Felix adjourned the proceedings without a verdict.
Why was Paul, then, not let go? Felix and his Jewish wife Drusilla listened to Paul’s messages, but Felix also a double motive: to get a bribe (24-26). This went on for two years. When replaced, corrupt Felix left Paul in prison as a favor for the Jews (27). What a contrast with the integrity Paul showed! Ultimately, corruption and injustice are not the true reasons for Paul’s troubles. Jesus had Paul in his hand, and he was carrying out his purpose for Paul even in this (23:11).
Application: Father, when I live before you in fear and holiness, I need fear no one else. Help me keep my conscience clear daily through the gospel of grace.
One Word: A clear conscience is a gift of grace
