Jacob’s tense meeting with Laban was but a prelude to his showdown with his brother Esau. Jacob’s past came back to haunt him as he remembered how he had deceived his father to receive the blessing meant for Esau and then fled. In his fear and distress, Jacob did not panic, but prayed to God, remembering God’s faithfulness and promise to him.
Jacob achieved many things with cunning, hard work, and patience. After gaining so much and still feeling anxious of losing everything, he realized what he really needed was something only God could give him.
After sending off his family, Jacob was alone. It was then that he encountered God and wrestled with him through the night, not giving up until he received a blessing. What he realized after it all was that God was always with him, preserving his life. It wasn’t just in the wrestling match, but throughout his pilgrimage, wherever he went, God was with him, just as he said he would be. God, who is the author of our life, cares for us and is with us in mercy and great love.
Application: Lord, you are with us every step of the way. Let us recognize your love and mercy that saves us today.
