When the fifth angel blew his trumpet, a star fell with power to open the shaft of the Abyss. This was an omen of destruction for the earth. First, there came smoke, followed by locusts. Locusts normally eat plants, but these locusts were different. They were sent to torment the earth for five months. The king over the locust army was the angel of the Abyss, known as the Destroyer. The locusts would torture godless people until they would long to die. But servants of God who bore his seal would not be harmed. Those who suffer for the sake of Jesus may be those who have the seal of God. They are spared the suffering of God’s judgment on godlessness.

Another woe came when the sixth angel blew his trumpet, releasing a massive army sent to kill a third of mankind. God's purpose in releasing this destruction on mankind was to turn people from their godless ways to repentance (20). God wants people to repent and be saved. However, they did not repent but persisted in idolatrous worship. Repentance is the seal of salvation. God accepts all who repent and worship him only.
Application: Lord, help me to live a life of repentance and worship you.
