The times may have been plentiful when Hosea brought this prophecy to Israel, but God tells them not to rejoice. Their source of joy was like that of their pagan neighbors (1). Israel had abandoned their covenant relationship with God and instead gave themselves to worshipping Baal, who they thought would bring them fertility. Their joy was futile, for they did not understand God’s almighty power and faithful provision.
Israel’s foolishness was like that of an adulterous woman who was going after her lovers, thinking the provision of wool and olive oil came from them (ch 2). The provision did not come from Baal. They would soon be taken away. God who provides can also take them away, and their idol worship will not save them from the infertility that comes as God’s punishment (14).
What is your source of joy? Do you rejoice in the Lord, who raised you in his great hope and vision? Do you trust that everything that gives you a sense of security belongs to him and that you live today because of his purpose in you? Would you come before him and ask for his mercy and love to restore your heart today?
Application: Father, thank you for the privilege of having a personal relationship with you. Your love is sufficient for me. All I have belongs to you, and you know my needs.
One Word: What is the source of my joy?
