It is unclear if the events in chapter 2 actually happened between Hosea and Gomer. But Hosea speaks of God’s lamentation about Israel, who acted like an unfaithful wife, not unlike his own.
Can you imagine a husband who pursues his wife who openly commits adultery when the norm of the time was to divorce her and put her through a public trial, meaning she would be stoned to death? Verses 6 and 7 may sound like forcing a woman against her will, but verse 8 reveals that the husband had been providing for her while she thought the supplies were from her lovers. The husband provided for her to keep her from great embarrassment (10) and paid for her lifestyle (11).
Even though the husband says he will take away her privileges and make her face reality, the purpose is to give her a chance to recognize her true husband. No matter how terribly Israel behaved, taking advantage of his grace, God kept his hope and vision that they would be united with them again and that Israel would finally understand God’s heart and acknowledge him.
Application: Father, you are my Lord and Savior. Where else would I find my peace and comfort? Please help me throw out the idols that have crept into my heart today so I can come to you as a pure bride.
One Word: You will acknowledge the Lord.
