Through the prophet Isaiah, the Lord gave a clear and decisive answer to King Hezekiah’s prayer for rescue from the Assyrian army. Hezekiah had only hoped for mercy for a surviving remnant, but the Lord would prevent Sennacherib and his army from shooting a single arrow at Jerusalem (32).
Isaiah’s poetic prophecy showed how the Lord would act in judgment against the arrogant pride of the king of Assyria (7). The Lord controls human history, and everything that rulers can accomplish is only because the Lord allows it (25). The Lord sent his angel to destroy the Assyrian army, and then King Sennacherib was killed by his own sons (35-37).
The Lord also promised Hezekiah that Judah would again take root and bear fruit (29-31). These events were part of the Lord’s world salvation purpose, through which he would finally send Jesus, the root and offspring of David, the Living Word, to give true salvation to his people.
