The Lamb of God had opened the sixth seal, unleashing his wrath upon the world. God’s enemies cried out in terror (6:12-15). However, four angels temporarily held back God’s wrath, represented by the four winds, until 144,000 from the tribes of Israel, were marked with a seal (7:1-4). The seal distinguished the servants of God from the enemies of the Lamb of God. Throughout church history, different understandings of the 144,000 have been put forth. But we can be sure that the 12,000 from 12 tribes symbolizes a very large, complete, number of people whom God saves and protects with the seal.
Then John was given another vision. He saw a countless multitude from every nation, tribe, people, and language wearing white robes and holding palm branches. All worshiped the Lamb, praising him for his salvation (7:9-10). They are all who have been washed white in the blood of the Lamb and have come through the great tribulation. The angels, elders, and creatures joined them.
We who have been sealed by the blood of the Lamb, can take heart. God has saved us from his wrath. We will be forever in God’s presence, where there will be no more suffering, death, or tears!
Application: Father, thank you for the blood of the Lamb. I rest secure in Jesus.
One Word: Sealed for heaven
