Outwardly, the Christians in Sardis appeared to be spiritually thriving. Perhaps they had once been passionate about Jesus and his gospel. However, by the time John wrote this letter to the church in Sardis, Jesus saw that they had become spiritually very dull. He challenged them to wake up from their spiritual sleepiness, remember the gospel, hold fast to it, and repent.
In contrast, there were a few who had not become spiritually complacent. Jesus promised them new clothes. Their names will be in the book of life, and they will be acknowledged by Jesus in heaven (Mt 10:32). Are you spiritually awake? Will you help others to come out of spiritual complacency?
Jesus also saw the deeds of the Christians in Philadelphia. They may have been Jewish Christians who had been kicked out of the synagogue and were persecuted. They did not deny Jesus’ name but patiently endured suffering and kept Jesus’ words. As victors in life, these Christians were promised an everlasting place in the city of God with open doors for them to enter. God would even make their persecutors fall at their feet, acknowledging Jesus’ love for them. These faithful Christians would bear Jesus’ name and the name of the city of God.
Application: Father, help us overcome spiritual complacency and live a victorious life in you.
One Word: Wake up!
