To find a wife for Isaac in a faraway land required strategy to “feel out” God’s faithfulness to Abraham, ultimately identifying Rebekah. Location is important so he went to Nahor, not waiting for her to show up. Standard is important; not beauty or purity, which Rebekah has both of, but hospitality, service and kindness, which she demonstrated (18-20). But most importantly, the servant sought God’s clear direction in this (21), even to the point of refusing dinner (33) until the answer was clear (49).
Seeing God’s hand at work, the servant holds a spontaneous worship service (26-27), as his gratitude bursts forth toward God. As we act in service to God’s purposes and for God’s people, we experience the reality of God’s presence. This becomes the fuel for our worship.
Entering Bethuel’s house and seeing Laban’s exuberance (29-31), not to mention the comfort after a long journey (32-33), Abraham’s servant could have relaxed. But he did not. He trusted God enough to be clear and transparent, repeating the entire story, including every detail. His trust in God allowed him to be clear and honest, not hiding or manipulative. This required faith in God more than desiring a quick resolution or a desired outcome.
