The nation of Edom had common ancestry with the nations of Israel and Judah. Edom was descended from Jacob’s brother Esau. The nations should have been close allies. But Edom had become proud and boastful. They believed their nation was impervious to attack from outside. Many in the cities of Petra and Sela lived in cliffside dwellings, making conquering the nation very difficult. They became complacent, proud, arrogant, and boastful. When their sister nation Judah experienced hardship, they gloated. They helped themselves to her spoils. Although these things happened to Judah because of judgment on her sin, the Lord would punish Edom for her sins as well. Edom would be destroyed.
God would bring about a reversal of fortune for both Judah and Edom. He would restore his people, while Edom would become like stubble that gets completely consumed in the fire. Deliverers would govern the mountains of Esau. The kingdom of Edom would be the Lord’s.
Application: Father, those who are proud and boastful, you bring down to the ground. Help me to repent that I may dwell in your presence.
One Word: The kingdom is the Lord’s
