In the first year of Darius, Daniel realized from Scripture that God’s destruction of Jerusalem would last 70 years. Then, he humbly pleaded with God in prayer, put on sackcloth and ashes, and fasted. He praised God for his faithfulness in keeping his promises to those who love him and obeyed his commands. He confessed the sins of his people and repented for their rebellion, their disobedience, and their refusal to listen to God’s prophets. And he pleaded for God’s mercy not because of anything they have done, but because of his great Name. He asked for God’s mercy and favor to restore his holy city and people who bear his Name. While he was praying, the angel Gabriel came and told him the holy city would take years to restore, the Anointed One would die there, the city would be destroyed, and war would never end. Jerusalem could not be their hope, but God’s everlasting kingdom is their living hope (1 Pet 1:3,4).
As Christians, may we humbly fast and pray for people of all nations to seek God’s forgiveness, mercy, and glory. We are sinful and rebellious and deserve God’s judgment. But may God have mercy on us not because of anything we have done, but so that his Name might be glorified and proclaimed in the earth through us (Jn 17:20).
Application: Father, please help me to pray for all nations to receive your mercy through Jesus.
One Word: Pray for God’s mercy on all people
