King Ahab invited King Jehoshaphat, a godly king of Judah, to join with him in fighting against the Arameans to take back Ramoth Gilead. Jehoshaphat said they should inquire of the Lord first, but there were not many of the Lord’s prophets left in Israel—just false prophets who told Ahab whatever he wanted to hear. Only Micaiah kept his integrity and spoke only what he heard from the Lord (14).
At first Micaiah seemed to also tell the king what he wanted to hear, but he did it in a way that showed he wasn’t serious (15b). Maybe Micaiah had a sarcastic streak! When Ahab demanded the truth, Micaiah revealed that it was God’s time for Ahab to meet his end for all his sins (20). Ahab’s last sin was not listening to the word of the Lord from Micaiah and persecuting him (26-27). Ahab went stubbornly on with his plan.
It is not easy to speak the truth to powerful people when we know it will not please them. Micaiah was one of a very few in Israel who had this integrity. Will I be such a person in my time?
Application: Father, help me not be tempted to flatter the powerful but speak with integrity. Please raise up servants of the word like Micaiah in our time.
One Word: Only speak the Lord’s words
