1. Violence in the city (1-11)

Perhaps Jesus thought about this Psalm as he approached his death in the city of Jerusalem. The Psalmist is troubled and full of anguish as he thinks about enemies who seek his life. He would like to leave the city and fly away to the desert on the wings of a dove!

2. A friend who betrays (12-14; 20-21)

His greatest sorrow is not caused by enemies, but by a friend, a close companion who betrays him (13,14). His friend greets him with a kiss, but death is in his heart (20,21). Could this be Judas?

3. Cast your cares on the Lord (16-19; 22-23)

He does not flee; he does not fight. He prays (1). The Psalmist cries out to God in the evening, in the morning and at noon. Jesus forgave his enemies; the Psalmist couldn't quite do that. But he praises God who is enthroned forever, and casts his cares on him.

Application: Lord, take fear and anxiety from my heart; I cast my cares on you.
